This is a wonderful time in your child's life. They are becoming more independent and are exploring the world with youthful exuberance! It is my pleasure to lead them on the magical exploration of life! During this year, we will continue to focus on the core areas of reading, writing and math.
I am very happy to have Mrs. Christy Hoss as my classroom assistant. Christy is a credentialed teacher and a wonderful asset to our class and the school. Her schedule is Monday to Thursday, 9 am to noon.
Reading- We will be using an assortment of assignments to reinforce spelling, comprehension, and writing. I have posted the list of 100 high frequency words. Your child should be able to read and spell all of these words by the end of 3rd grade. Accelerated Reader (AR) will be used as a guide and progress check to help improve the children's comprehension while reading appropriately leveled books. You can check an AR book level at www.arbookfind.com. I will assign your child a % goal, a point goal and a reading level goal based on their abilities each trimester. I will send biweekly progress reports throughout the year.
Writing- I was fortunate to be able to attend a marvelous writing workshop, 6+1 Traits. Kenwood is using the guidelines in our K-6 classrooms.
Common Core- The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a coherent progression of learning expectations in English Language Arts and Mathematics designed to prepare K-12 students for college and career success. The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) include standards for use in ELA courses, as well as literacy standards in history/social studies and science. The standards for ELA describe expertise that students will develop in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. The standards also describe how students use and strengthen these skills—particularly reading and writing—in other subjects at their grade level.
The CCSS for Mathematics include two types of standards: one for mathematical practice (how students are able to apply and extend mathematical principles) and one for mathematical content (what students know about math). The two are linked together while students are learning.
Handwriting- We will be introducing cursive this year! I have posted a chart for your reference. I will introduce a letter or letters in class and the children will practice them at home.
Math- We are piloting a Common Core aligned curriculum from New York. The new standards focus on multiplication, division, fractions on the number line and data collection. I understand that change is difficult, but I ask for your support as we navigate the new standards. We will be using IXL again this year. I will send home log in information and passwords.
Science- We will be investigating the solar system, plant and animal adaptions, energy and matter and a little engineering. We are beginning to introduce the New Generation Science Standards this year.
Social Studies- Our focus will be maps, early explorers to California, Native Americans in our region and the U.S. government.
