Welcome to Third Grade!
This is a wonderful time in your child's life. They are becoming independent and are exploring the world with youthful exuberance! It is my pleasure to lead them on the magical exploration of life. During this year we will continue to focus on the core areas of reading, writing and math.
I am very happy to have Mrs. Christy Hoss as my classroom assistant. Christy is a credentialed teacher and a wonderful asset to our class and the school. Her schedule in our class is Monday through Thursday, 9 am to noon.
Reading- We will be using an assortment of assignments to reinforce spelling, comprehension, and writing. I have included the list of 100 high frequency words. Your child should be able to read and spell these words by the end of 3rd grade. Accelerated Reader will be used as a guide and progress check to help improve the children's comprehension while reading appropriately leveled books. You can check and AR book level at www.arbookfind.com.
Writing- I was fortunate to be able to attend a marvelous writing workshop, 6+1 Traits. Kenwood is using the guidelines in our K-6 classrooms.
Handwriting- We will be introducing cursive this year. I will introduce a letter or letters in class and the children will practice them at home. I have included a copy of the cursive alphabet we are using.
Math- With the advent of Common Core, I have implemented a 6 unit math course that focuses on multiplication, division, fractions on the number line and data collection. I really like the way the program gives children the chance to solve and explain problems in their own way. There is no right of wrong method...as long as they get the right answer!!
Science- We will be studying energy and matter, plant and animal adaptions and the solar system.
Social Studies- Our focus is map reading, Native Americans in our region and the role of the US government.
Homework- Homework will generally be assigned Monday-Thursday. It will almost always include a math page and language arts practice. The best homework I can suggest is to continue reading to/with your child.
Classroom Helpers- I have a calendar sign up sheet each month. Please remember to let everyone have a chance to work in the classroom. I also have two delightful Oakmont volunteers. Mrs. Carr is a retired teacher who loves reading with the children. Dr. L. is a retired orthodontist who love teaching anatomy to the children.
Classroom Discipline- My main focus is on positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviors by a child, a table group or the whole class. Rewards are in the form of classroom money. We will be spending/saving our money and learning about currency throughout the entire year. We will have opportunities to buy 'treasures' at Business Day.
Conferences- Our first trimester ends November and conferences will be. If at anytime, you feel the need to talk, please call the school (833-2500) or email me ([email protected]) to set up an appointment.
